Thanks for the Liebster Award!

First of all, thank you so much from Drew and Julie from Drive on the Left for nominating us for the Liebster Award! It came as a total shock to us, as we really had no idea other bloggers were reading, let alone liking what we are doing here! So it was pretty exciting to find out we were nominated! What is the Liebster Award? Don’t worry, until our nomination, we were clueless as well (we really put the ‘new’ in newbie bloggers!)

The Liebster Award is a great initiative by bloggers for bloggers. It promotes a great sense of community where bloggers who have been nominated answer 11 questions they’ve been given and then go on to nominate five other new blogs they have enjoyed reading to answer a new bunch of questions. One of those “pay it forward” kind of deals.

So without further adieu, here are our nominees, our responses to Drew and Julie’s questions and the new questions posed for our nominees. Enjoy and thanks a lot guys!

Questions from Drew & Julie (Drive on the Left):

1. How did you come up with the name of your blog?

I love to play with words and since most of my friends and family refer to me as “Ling”, it seemed like the perfect opportunity to go with Travel-Ling! We’re still working out the best way to audibly spell out the name to others though (“Travel hyphen Ling”, “Travel dash Ling”???)

L&GIstanbul

We love travelling and want to see it all!

2. What was the biggest mistake you made while starting your blog?

You mean we can only list one? Haha I think I make mistakes on a daily basis! Our biggest mistake so far has been thinking that if you simply write interesting articles, people will find you. We are learning that there is a lot more to blogging than just writing quality content!

3. What was your least favourite place you have visited?

Hmmm, Naples in Italy was a bit of a let down. Italy is one of our favourite countries in the world and we’ve visited a few times and explored different cities. It was so much busier, dirtier and seemingly run-down than other cities. The straw that broke the camels back for us was when we witnessed an old Grandma just throw her half-eaten sandwich on the street whilst walking, without a care in the world! In spite of this, it is a great base to do day trips to places such as Pompeii, although we much preferred Sorrento and the Amalfi Coast.

Naples: It just doesn’t compare to other Italian cities

4. If you could hop on a plane tomorrow for a week-long holiday, where would you go?

Spain. Hands down, it’s our number one place to visit in all of the world. But in saying that, we wouldn’t be unhappy lying on a beach in Tahiti, trekking in South America or visiting any European capital.

We are self-confessed Hispanophiles

5. What food have you tried that you wish you had avoided?

Jarret de Porc in Nimes. After living in Spain for eight months, I really got into the way they cooked their pork. So when I saw this on the menu, and thinking how similar Nimes is to Andalucía, I automatically assumed it would be a delicious meal of tender pork. I couldn’t be more wrong. It was so tough, I almost broke my knife trying to cut through it, and when I finally did saw off a piece to eat, it tasted like it had been stewing in bathwater for days. To make things worse, the potatoes on the side were served partially cooked. It was THE WORST meal I have ever eaten and to this day feel sick thinking about it!

Jarret de Porc: It tasted so much worse than it looked!

6. Preferred method of travel and why: plane, train or automobile?

We like all for different reasons. We love the freedom of having a car – we were able to drive to so many cute towns in Spain that we wouldn’t have been able to see by public transport. Trains were great too though, as you could really chill out or work whilst getting to the destination. But coming from Australia, planes are the main way to get around the country (and beyond!). I hate how much time is spent around the airport though. To get there a couple of hours beforehand, to waiting around for luggage, sometimes we felt it was quicker to take a train!

You don’t get to see cloud art like this on the ground!

7. If you could take one historical figure with you on holiday, who would you take and where?

Tough question! Ok, after much discussion back and forth we settled on Cole Porter. Simply because we both would have so much fun with him! I (Kim-Ling) studied jazz vocals and I love his songs, and Guy would love to hear all of his crazy stories from his parties in Paris to his days in the French Foreign Legion. I can just picture it now, partying it up in Paris in a piano bar, surrounded by some colourful and interesting characters!

8. Do you prefer a peaceful, quiet beach or the buzz of city life?

We cannot go past a peaceful, idyllic beach. There is nothing more blissful than lying on the perfect beach, with sand on our toes, feeling the sun rays warm up our skin whilst listening to the rolling waves. It’s an Australian thing…

K&GMallorca

Mallorca, Spain: We are happiest when we are at the beach.

9. Which of the Natural Seven Wonders of the World would you like to visit most?

That is a tough one! We went to Finland earlier this year to see the Aurora Borealis and got a tiny glimpse of it, but as it was so brief, I want to see it again! The Great Barrier Reef is also on our bucket list and it might be easier to get to from Australia!

10. What is the best piece of advice someone gave you concerning travel?

Just do it. It is cliché, but really, to travel is one of the best things in life. It opens your eyes to new cultures and new experiences. It grounds you and elates you at the same time! Honestly, if you want to go somewhere, make it happen! There will always be family or friends to pick up the pieces if it doesn’t quite work out, but to miss out on an adventure or new experience due to fear or small obstacles is far worse than the amazing stories you will have if you find a way to make it work!

Open yourself up to experiences and the world is yours to conquer!

11. What are three places on your travel bucket list?

You mean we can only have three? Well, if we had to quickly mention three from our ever-growing bucket list, it would be overwater bungalows in Tahiti, trekking Machu Pichu in Peru and the walking along the Great Wall of China.
